Well it turns out this blog stuff could be quite a success – 40 people other than myself visited the blog yesterday! So I should probably start writing some stuff…
Truth is, there’s not much to write about just yet. I’ve spent yet another day surveying the piles of clothes and assorted items on the dining room floor, and making small adjustments. And I still haven’t quite decided which bag to take yet – do I go for the massive rucksack or the big bag with wheels??
To be honest, the prospect of six weeks in Africa has always felt very surreal, probably because I have nothing to relate it to – I’ve never been outside of Europe, and I’ve never been travelling on my own before (although Les, the trainee vicar at my church, has given me a great ‘masterclass’ on what to expect from the culture, how to greet people etc).
However, the reality of my trip to Uganda is starting to dawn – travelling on my own, spending 6 weeks away from home, immersing myself in a foreign culture. And being a medical student at the same time!
I sense that tomorrow will involve much hanging around – I’ll spend the morning waiting for the coach, get to the airport ridiculously early, spend hours waiting to check in and go through customs and security, before finally flying out at 9.15pm. But hopefully there’s no chance I’ll be late…
Tomorrow, tomorrow has now become “Today, today” – had a text from D to say he was on the plane just before 9pm, so he’ll be off by now and getting closer to Uganda as I type…..
